Overview

Microsoft asked our team to explore pathways to communicate to Xbox users that a change to their capture storage was coming. They also wanted examples of scenarios that users may encounter as a result of this change. We were then to produce a competitive analysis, visual recommendations that follow Xbox UX conventions and a prototype of a userflow for one of the recommended pathways. A Powerpoint was also provided for Microsoft’s product manager for use with their own presentation materials internally.

Challenge

Xbox cloud storage is being integrated into a universal storage quota for their entire Microsoft account, which has been previously separate. This can negatively impact the user in several ways:

  1. As a result of integrating Xbox Captures into Microsoft Cloud Storage, it may set their account over the free limit resulting in the user having to choose between:

    • Upgrading storage: Making additional payment to cover Xbox captures

    • Delete files to keep under the free limit

  2. Capture limit or current status was not discoverable

  3. Management of files on Xbox is a challenge due to both the UI and input methods

  4. Messaging of limits are currently not in place

Project Goal

Provide a solution that properly messages the user and provides frictionless options to mitigate storage challenges with little to no interruption to their game.

Solutions

Our key user flow focused on the highest-stakes scenario which involved a user with little to no storage available and is attempting to save a key moment while in game.

In this flow we ensure the user is properly notified of their storage challenge and allow the user to view options and take action. Due to the limitations of input for a game system (a controller) we provide several solutions that cater to limitations on both time and money.

In-the-moment solutions:

  • Quickest but requires money: Upgrade storage
Made easy by providing the best storage solution first and leveraging payment details already on file with the console.

  • Free but requires some time: mitigate files on-console
Introduce a system of filters and mass-selection options that can help users reduce storage consumption in bulk.

Later date/reminder solution:

  • Remind me via email
Provides the user an option to mitigate option on another device by sending information via email.
Providing a link to manage/mitigate on the web
Allows for more robust mitigation due to better user input systems
Allows the user to get back to their game should they not have the time right now.

My Role

As the UX designer on this project, I provided benchmarking research to give us a baseline of what currently existed within the platform for notifications, possible areas for messaging, and methods available for managing storage using El Gato Capture card directly from Xbox.

I worked with my Director and Client to clarify the problem, decide on user stories and ultimately designed the user flow the client needed.

I presented work to the client each week to ensure we’re on track with the desired final deliverables and within the timeframe for the project.

I provided Figma low-to-high fidelity designs for possible user flows and messaging solutions, as well as the final Figma prototype, micro-animations and custom components based on the client’s design system.
